I can't believe no-one mentioned 12/31/81. One of the best Shakedown's kicks off set 2 followed by great versions of Cold Rain, Big Boss Man and Roses. Set 3 features an awesome Playin>Terrapin>Playin sandwich with a fantastic Space>Other One>NFA>GDTRFB>Dew. To top it all off we got a 4th set Dark Star>Bertha>Good Love. All in all a stellar show!

The whole show is great. I would particularly recommend listening to the whole of the 3rd set jam after Aiko, PITB through Dew! Set 4 is great too. Some very sweet stuff.

I have listened to that CR&S, PG. Hell of a wedding present.
Do you know when that evening they tied the knot?

I believe it was between the 2nd set and the New Year countdown.

It would have to be before New Year's to work for tax reasons, I guess ...

Given how the divorce, estate planning, etc was worked out later, it's entirely possible they forgot to ask an attorney. I think it was a Buddhist ceremony. Which would make sense, since neither one of them was Buddhist.

On the CRS: I think there was a wild storm that night, and they ended up closing the bridges. I'd like to think it was prompted by that and not the impending tying of the knot!

Really ... if there is one song that is *not* romantic, it's Cold Rain and Snow. Geez.

PG - This version includes the Joan Baez set. Not sure anybody cares, but there it is.

Would be interested to hear your reaction to Joan with the Dead, if you ended up listening to that, Ringo!

Happy New Year :-)

Well, to be honest it didn't do much for me. I only listened to a couple of songs. I do love Joan, but I guess she didn't really synch with the Dead that way. It seems like she should, but I guess she didn't.

Yes, I agree. Sets 3 and 4 are great, IMO -- PG gave the run-down of the highlights, which sort of blast out one after another in that post-midnight section -- but I don't think they include Joan, except for the Baby Blue.

What strikes me as interesting about the Joan parts is that it shows how distinctive and really overpowering the Dead's musical personality was. It's not enough to be a good singer; you have to mesh in some other way that's hard to define.

Because she doesn't blend personality-wise or flavor-wise or mood-ring-wise or however you'd put it, it's almost as if the Powers That Be do this weird perverse trick and make her sound almost screechy, when in fact the opposite should be true -- she's got such a sweet, beautiful, tuneful voice. But the twain just don't meet.

From DB9 Mike Dolgushkin and Mary Eisenhart both commented on the tensions b/t JB and GD(well, not with MH).
On 12/12/81 they played together for the Dance for Disarmament Benefit. It was an unhappy gig. Garcia appeared frustrated by JB's constraints. He didn't come out for the encore. Later evidently, the CR&S during the GD set was "RIPPIN" (M.D.).
On NYE JB defers to the "Maestro" during her set. But something happens. From M.E.,
"It ends with Baby Blue and the culmination of what was known as the Joan Baez Scare, with Baez taking it upon herself to take the stage, walk over Jerry's vocals and perform some bizarre dance on stage."

Interesting. I sort of felt he was dealing with her by falling back in his vocals and letting her dominate. Maybe it wasn't intentional, though. Lots of oil-and-water stuff going on there, I guess.

Yeah, I listened to the entire set earlier today. New to me and very worthwhile.

Peace in 2011.
